The Island and the Water Scorpion

The water temperature was approximately 50° and the air temperature was approximately 55°. Winds were pretty strong as today was a “warm before the storm” day. They swirled directly from the south to south southeast. Despite that, there were some fish rising and I was able to get a few juvenile browns up on blue wing cripple patterns, although I think what the fish were really going for were Buffalo Midges. That being said, the pattern must have been close enough to get their attention.

On days like this, I don’t mind being patient and waiting for my turn to cast between wind gusts. I’ll sit on the bank and observe holes, jot down notes, or sometimes just stare and get lost in the river. During one such occasion, I came across this wild-looking stick bug I’d never seen before. I had to ask a few friends what in the world it was. Turns out, that not many have ever seen such a thing in the river. So when I returned home to Salt Lake, I had to google it. Sure enough, it’s called a water scorpion!
